Following a WorkCover premium/claims costs review, City of Greater Bendigo engaged P2 Group in 2015 to help enhance their injury management processes and build a strong early intervention framework. P2 Group Occupational Therapists began assessing injured workers immediately for both WorkCover claims and non-work related injuries (Physical & Psychological) and successfully managed to return staff to work quickly while at the same time significantly reducing the number of standard claims being lodged. Advanced RTW strategies were put in place for long term injuries and all complex WorkCover claims were subsequently resolved.
Early Intervention/Injury Management training was presented to all managers to educate them on the importance of early intervention, best process for effective early intervention, early warning signs of physical and psychological injures, conversation & engagement techniques and how to take a pro-active approach to injury management. The result of the training was that COBG has far less WorkCover claims, a more productive workforce, reduced absenteeism and an early intervention culture.
In addition, COGB highlighted the need to document the Inherent Requirements of Jobs from a physical, cognitive, psychosocial and environmental perspective so they can accurately align a workers capacity with their job demands. COGB have successfully used these documents for ageing workforce challenges, pre-employment and injury management.
At the beginning of the engagement (2015/16) the Council’s WorkCover rate was 51.21% worse than Industry Average. Currently, the Council’s WorkCover rate is 63% better than industry Average. WorkSafe Victoria have confirmed City of Greater Bendigo is the best performing Council in Victoria for the second year running ! Congratulations to all involved at the City of Greater Bendigo.
